If Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling is going to be forced out of the NBA, it seems that he is intent on dragging anyone he can down with him.
According to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com), Sterling's lawyers have hired four private investigation firms to uncover any incriminating details about the NBA's former and current commissioners as well as the league's other 29 owners. The person who revealed the news to the AP explained the reasoning behind the move:
The gloves are off, as they say. Have them dig up all the dirt they can find.(Sterling) realized these guys will literally go to any low to get this sold. Even if it gets (him) nothing other than exposing all these guys and shaking up the league and seeing a change in the leadership of the league, it'll be worth it to him.
The investigators will reportedly explore every possible avenue of misconduct. They will look into finances, such as compensation doled out to David Stern and Adam Silver, and they will investigate social conduct, as in whether any other owner has made racial or sexist statements in the past.
Sterling, of course, has been banned for life from the NBA after a recording of his racist remarks surfaced. According to ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne, he is currently suing the NBA for $1 billion "for relying on information from an 'illegal' recording" and forcing the sale of the team, which was bought by former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for $2 billion a few weeks ago.
The investigating firms, which are being given a six-figure budget, are essentially competing against each other and will be given 30 days to collect their results. Sterling's camp has yet to confirm the report. Stay tuned as this story continues to develop.
